'We are fighting for the minority'

April 28, 2009

Abu Asim Azmi, flanked on either side by Hindu priests, Muslim Maulvis and Sikh representatives, made sure that the secular image of his campaign was at the forefront of his rally. All sections of society, including women, were represented in this last rally before the election.

A burqa-clad lady accompanied the politician on his van, while a truck full of cheering women followed, shouting slogans and urging people to go out and vote on April 30.

Seeming rather confident of securing the votes of the minority community, Abu Azmi says, "We are fighting for the minority, and our party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav has always raised his voice against atrocities towards the minorities. Right from 1947, the Muslims have had Hindu leaders, and today it's Mulayam Singh that the minorities believe in the most."
