'We will emulate Saudi Arabia'
April 28, 2009
Speaking about the issues he will tackle if and when he comes to power, he says, "I am against all kinds of oppression and atrocities. I also want to provide everyone with food, clothing and shelter. I will also address the problem of unemployment. In my area, the biggest problem is the shortage of drinking water. Today we talk about beautifying Mumbai, removing slums, improving local trains, building flyovers...and yet people don't have water to drink. We will definitely make an effort to emulate Chennai and Saudi Arabia's systems of purifying sea water and making it fit to drink."
Staunchly supporting the controversial points of the Samajwadi Party manifesto that have been the subject of much debate recently, Azmi says, "India lives in its villages, not cities. Where there is no water to drink, people don't care about education. And we are not saying that English shouldn't be taught in schools -- we are only saying that all government work should take place in our national language, Hindi."
