Pakistan asks Zargar to co-ordinate
militant activity during J&K polls

Pakistan is hell bent upon disrupting the forthcoming polls in Jammu and Kashmir and has appointed Mushtaq Zargar, chief of the Al-Umar Mujahideen, as the 'chief co-ordinator' of militant activities during the polls, Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) K Rajendra said on Sunday.

The militants have been told to carry out attacks on candidates and political parties, he said.

"We have got concrete information that Zargar (one of the three militants released in exchange for passengers of the Indian Airlines plane hijacked in 1999) will be co-ordinating the activities of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Tayiba, Al-Badr and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen," he said.

Rajendra, who was in Delhi to review the security arrangements for the ensuing polls, said there was a steady rise in political killings but efforts were underway to ensure that elections passed off peacefully.

"Come what may, even this time, the nefarious designs of Pakistan will be frustrated," he asserted.

Allaying fears of the polling staff coming from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, he said, "They should not feel threatened. The moment they arrive in J&K, they would be under a thick security cover and would also be provided bullet-proof jackets and helmets."
