Statistical highlights (2nd day) at Bangalore

by Mohandas Menon

-- The wicket of Craig White was Javagal Srinath's 100th at home in 27 matches. He becomes the sixth bowler (all Indians) to take 100 or more wickets on Indian soil. Kapil Dev (219 wickets in 65 matches), Anil Kumble (194 in 34), BS Chandrasekhar (142 in 32), BS Bedi (137 in 30) and Vinoo Mankad (103 in 23) are the others to reach this milestone on Indian soil. Srinath now has 101 wickets in 27 matches.

-- The partnership of 63 runs between James Foster and Ashley Giles was the best for the eighth wicket by a pair for a visiting team at this venue bettering the 46 runs also by an English pair of Ian Botham and Graham Dilley in December 1981. However the all-time best for this wicket at this ground still remains as the 84 by Ravi Shastri and Kiran More against New Zealand in November 1988.

-- Foster's 48 was his highest score in his short Test career of just three Test matches. His previous best was the 40 he made in the first innings in the last Test match at Ahmedabad.

-- Srinath's 4-73 was his best bowling against England bettering his 4-103 at Birmingham in June 1996. This was his fifth match against England.

-- Srinath's four wickets has taken his career tally to 216 in 57 matches. This places him in the joint 34th position among bowlers with maximum Test wickets. Incidentally, he joins the former Australian leggie Clarrie Grimmett, who too has the same number of wickets but in 20 less matches, i.e. in just 37 Tests!

-- Anil Kumble became the second Indian bowler (after Kapil Dev 434 wickets) and the 18th bowler in Test cricket history to reach the landmark of 300 wickets. He also becomes the fourth slow bowler after Australian Shane Warne (421 wickets), Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralithan (374) and West Indian Lance Gibbs (309) to capture 300 or more wickets.

-- Now other than Kumble, the only other two bowlers who have achieved this landmark on their home ground are West Indian Curtly Ambrose - at St John's, Antigua in 1997 against Sri Lanka and South African Allan Donald - at Bloemfontein in 2000 against New Zealand.

-- Meanwhile, Matthew Hoggard now becomes the fourth English batsman to be a 300th Test victim. The others being: Jack Richards (for Imran Khan, Pakistan, in 1987), Mike Watkinson (for Courtney Walsh, West Indies, in 1995) and Alan Mullally (for Wasim Akram, Pakistan, in 1996). -- Andrew Flintoff (3-30) recorded his best Test bowling figures of his career in his 12th match. His previous best was the 2-31 against South Africa at Port Elizabeth in December 1999.
