Ashok Dubey, president of the Congress party's Amethi unit, squarely blames Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for Amethi's woes.
"Mayawati is harassing the people of Amethi day and night because she wants Rahul Gandhi to be out of this place. But the people of this place love him so much that they will vote for him," he explains.
This is also one of Gandhi's themes during the campaign, of how he wants to work for the people of Amethi with both hands, but one hand has been chopped off due to non-cooperation from the Bahujan Samaj Party-led state government.
"The state government tries its best to stall every project that Rahul Gandhi or Soniaji bring for Amethi or Rae Bareli. The state government refused to allocate land for the rail coach factory in Rae Bareli. Finally the courts asked the state government to do so and now the factory is being built. This will create thousands of jobs," says Dubey.
He lists Gandhi's other achievements -- setting up an Indian Institute of Information and Technology and an Institute of Fashion Technology. A defence ordinance factory and a Central Reserve Police Force centre at Bhadar in Amethi are also in the pipeline.
