West Indies vs Canada, Centurion

  • Nicholas Ifill became the 26th player to appear for Canada in limited-over internationals and the World Cup.
  • Playing the fourth match of his career, John Davison, whose previous highest score was 31 against Kenya at Cape Town on 15-2-2003, recorded the first hundred for Canada. During his three-figure knock he went past the previous highest score, of 71 runs, by a Canadian batsman (Ian Billcliff against Kenya at Cape Town on 15-2-2003).
  • Davison's 111 is only the fourth three figure score made by a batsman from a non-Test playing nation against a Test nation in LOIs.  Zimbabweans Dave Houghton (142 v New Zealand at Hyderabad on 10-10-1987) and Andy Flower (115 not out v Sri Lanka at New Plymouth on 23-2-1992), and Bangladeshi Mehrab Hossain (101 v Zimbabwe at Dhaka on 25-3-1999) are the other batsmen to do so in LOIs.
  • Davison's 67-ball hundred was the fastest in the World Cup. He betters the previous quickest hundred in the World Cup which was the 82-ball century by West Indian captain Clive Lloyd against Australia at Lord's in the 1975 World Cup final on 21-6-1975. (Note: Kapil Dev during his 175 not out against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells in 1983 reached his hundred in 100 balls and not 72 balls!).
  • The opening partnership of 96 runs between Davison and Ishwar Maraj was Canada's best for any wicket in LOIs. The pair surpassed the previous best of 86 runs for the 4th wicket between Billcliff and Joe Harris against Kenya at Cape Town on 15-2-2003.
  • For the first time in seven LOI matches, Canadian batsmen have managed to cross the total of 200 runs. The team had made 197 against Kenya at Cape Town earlier in the tournament.
  • Vasbert Drakes (5-44) became the only second bowler to take a five-wicket haul against Canada after Australian Alan Hurst (5-21 at Birmingham on 16-6-1979).
  • This was Drakes's first five-wicket haul of his career in 21 matches. His previous best bowling performance was the 4-18 against Bangladesh on 2-12-2002.
  • The 26-run over (464660) by Brian Lara off the bowling of Barry Seebaran was the maximum scored by a batsman in an over in the World Cup. The previous record was held by the South African pair of Jacques Kallis (7 runs) and Hansie Cronje (16) when they took 24 runs off an over from New Zealand's Chris Cairns at Birmingham on 10-6-1999.
  • Lara's 23 ball fifty was the quickest made in the World Cup. He bettered the previous record of 24 balls briefly held by teammate Wavell Hinds earlier in the match. Hinds had earlier obliterated the record of quickest fifty, which was made in 28 balls by Australian Tom Moody against Bangladesh at Chester-le-Street on 27-5-1999.
  • West Indies's score of 163-2 was the most runs made by any team after 15 overs in LOIs. West Indies had made 160-1 in 15 overs against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 9-10-1999.
  • West Indies' 206-3 in 20.3 overs was the fastest innings by any team in ODIs. The run rate which was 10.04 runs per over betters the previous best run-rate of 9.56 runs per over which was achieved by Australia during its innings of 118-0 in 12.2 overs against England at Sydney earlier this year on 23-1-2003.
  • West Indies' win with 177 balls (29.3 overs) to spare was the biggest in LOI history by a team chasing over 200 runs while batting second. Previously Pakistan (219-1) had defeated India (216) at Lahore on 2-10-1997 with 142 balls (23.4 overs) to spare after chasing a target over 200 runs.
