Ayman al-Zawahari killed in Afghanistan: Report

The second-in-command of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahari, was killed in Afghanistan, Russian news agency ITAR-TASS said on Thursday.

In a report from Islamabad, it cited sources as saying that Zawahiri was killed in a special operation carried out by unidentified individuals. It did not give any date.

An Afghan military chief had said in December 2001 that Zawahiri was injured and possibly killed in an air attack near the Tora Bora mountains.

However, German intelligence sources were reported as saying in September 2002 that Laden and senior leaders of his Al Qaeda network, including Zawahiri, were hiding in the mountain ranges near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

Zawahiri, a physician from a prominent Egyptian family, is one of the most wanted man in the world.

The United States state department has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
