Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller has warned that suicide bombers, like the ones who wreaked havoc in Israel recently, could strike the Unites States in the near future.
"There will be another terrorist attack. I think we will see that in the future, I think it is inevitable," Mueller said in response to a query after addressing the National Association of District Attorneys meeting in suburban Alexandria (Virginia) on Monday.
He said the degree of fanaticism that an informant must exhibit to get into the inner circle of a terrorist group makes it difficult for law-enforcement agencies to penetrate such organisations.
"I wish I could be more optimistic," he said.
Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who are routinely briefed by the White House, also said that terrorist attacks on the US are inevitable.
Similar warnings have been issued by Vice President Richard Cheney and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.
