War against terror will go beyond Afghanistan: Bush

The United States President George W Bush on Monday declared that the war against terrorism has entered the second stage and will go beyond Afghanistan through a sustained campaign by denying sanctuaries and safe havens for terrorists.

"We have entered the second stage of war on terror; a sustained campaign to deny sanctuaries to terrorists who would threaten our citizens from anywhere in the world," he said at a ceremony to commemorate the six-month anniversary of the attack on the World trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

"We will win the war (against terrorism) and Afghanistan will not be the last battle. The terrorists who are fleeing are looking for other bases for operations. There should be no safe haven," Bush said.

Bush, while referring to the 'power and vitality' of the coalition against terrorism acknowledged the critical support of countries like Pakistan and Uzbekistan for the campaign.

Referring to the progress in the campaign against terrorism, Bush said, "Terrorist assets are frozen, terrorist front groups exposed, terrorist regimes toppled from power and terrorist plots unravelled from Spain to Singapore."

Bush said that each passing day required new courage and the US will not forget the lives taken by the terrorist attack.

The president said that terrorists can strike at any centre of civilisation and highlighted how several countries have lived in the shadow of terrorism and merciless killing.

Bush said that the September 11 attack was not the beginning of global terrorism, but a start of a concerted response to combat this problem.
