The leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh, who was sentenced to death on July 15 for the abduction and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, on Friday filed an appeal in the Sindh high court saying he was convicted on the basis of "fake, false and provenly planted evidence".
The appeal was filed by Saeed's lawyer Abdul Waheed Katpar, who said, "Two high court judges will hear this appeal and I am 100 per cent confident that justice will be done."
An anti-terrorism court in Hyderabad, Pakistan, had awarded death penalty to Saeed, one of the three terrorists released by India to secure the release of the passengers on board the hijacked IC 814 in 1999.
Three of his accomplices were awarded life-terms.
Saeed had called the trial a waste of time and threatened revenge.
If the appeals are denied at the provincial level, they can again be challenged in the supreme court. The process could take more than a year.
