Americans urged to celebrate I-day amidst unprecedented security

War planes randomly patrolled over several cities in the US and the FBI and law enforcement agencies kept on full alert as the country prepares to celebrate its independence day on Thursday, the first since the September 11 attacks, with colourful parades and dazzling firework displays.

Special security check points have been set up for those who want to see the fireworks display in New York.

"A variety of actions are being taken on the ground in terms of greater resources, greater surveillance, greater protection, greater prevention," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said.

He said President George W Bush's message is that the American people should gather and celebrate as law enforcement will be on hand to do the worrying and the watching.

The FBI told local law enforcement agencies that there is no 'credible threat' about specific targets but there are reports of 'heightened operational activity by terrorists round the world'.

A government source said that the FBI has received information that individuals with ties to international terrorist groups have viewed and gathered information on stadiums in the US and Europe.

Reports quoting the FBI said people with possible ties to terror groups have visited Web sites of two big stadiums - the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis and RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

But no events are scheduled in these two venues.
