US forces raid two compounds in Kandahar, 12 killed

In the first major ground strike on Taliban and Al Qaeda bases after the establishment of an interim Afghan administration, American special forces raided two compounds in Kandahar, in the process killing more than a dozen people and capturing 27 others.

US defence officials at a briefing said that intelligence inputs had indicated that the compound housed top Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders.

They also said that a US soldier was 'lightly wounded' in the attack.

Air Force General Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the raid was launched on Friday morning in the mountains north of Kandahar.

"This would never be described as a walk in the park," Myers said.

Myers said most of those found inside were Afghan fighters. He said that intelligence reports had indicated the presence of Arab Al Qaeda fighters.

"Once the compound was raided, we found it was mostly of a Taliban nature," he said.
