Congress to mull $500 million aid to Pakistan

The United States administration is preparing to ask Congress for $500 million in new assistance to Pakistan as a reward for its support to 'war against terrorism'.

The requests are in addition to $100 million in cash, half of which was sent to Islamabad this week, and half to be transmitted next week, Congressional aides were quoted as saying by the media in Washington.

The administration's largesse toward Pakistan is another sign of how Washington is rewarding Arab and Muslim states that back its anti-terror campaign, the New York Times said.

Administration officials told a Senate briefing that the new $500 million in economic assistance would be used for education, health programmes and for border security.

The aid would be stretched out over several years. The administration officials told the briefing that they wanted to waive sanctions, which prevent the US from selling or giving Pakistan military equipment.

The officials said they wanted to send spare parts to enable Pakistan to lend more efficient support to whatever military action the US might take from Pakistan against Osama bin Laden, prime suspect in this month's terror strikes in the US, and Taleban.
