50 suspects involved in US attack identified

The United States on Thursday identified 50 people suspected to have been involved in the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington and launched a parallel diplomatic effort to rope in Pakistan in the search for Osama bin Laden. The Saudi-millionaire is suspected to be behind the strikes that could have killed thousands of people.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials quoted by the CNN said about 50 people had been identified as having participated or assisted in planning Tuesday's attacks.

The authorities said 27 suspected terrorists, hailing from West Asia, had received various kinds of pilot training in the US and elsewhere.

As the US secured support from its NATO allies and other nations in its bid to zero in on the perpetrators, new American Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlin met President Pervez Musharraf and asked for his support.

The meeting with Musharraf came after Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke to the Pakistani president and Richard Armitage summoned Islamabad's envoy Maleeha Lodhi on Wednesday.

"We had a meeting of minds. The Pakistani president pledged his cooperation," Chamberlin said.
