Nine people of Indian origin among those injured

At least nine people of Indian origin were among those injured in Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, which led to the collapse of the twin towers.

They are Pundi Venketeshan, Christine Acinapura, Rajkumaree Singh, Jasmatia Rupharaia, Badheeridin Lakhani, Neerja Desai, Manu Dhingra, Silvia Ramsunder and Dipin Chellani.

Around 20 per cent of the estimated 50,000 people who worked in the twin towers' financial firms were believed to be of Indian origin.

The Indian consulate in New York is closely monitoring any casualties among Indians and has named special officers to render immediate help to the families in case of any tragedy.

The consulate, which has been inundated with calls from India seeking information about their relatives, has set up special telephone numbers for the purpose.

It is collecting information about Indians who have been admitted in various hospitals and posting their names on its website www.Indiacgny.org.

An official of the consulate advised those seeking information to log on to its website before calling on telephone as lines are very busy.

The dedicated telephone numbers are:
212-774-0625 (Consul R K Singh) and
212-774-0604 (Consul A S Bajpai).

Till Wednesday evening, the consulate had posted names of nine Indians injured on its website.
