World leaders react with
anger, revulsion

World leaders reacted have reacted with anger to the aircraft attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed deep sympathy to the people of the United States, the Kremlin quoted spokesman Alexei Gromov as saying.

"I am horrified by the news we have just heard," said French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is rushing back to London from a trade union conference. He said world leaders would have to combat international terrorism.

Berlin said it was shocked and said Germany's security council was convening.

German air traffic authorities said all European flights to the United States had been suspended.

Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer told Israel's Army Radio it was "simply a tragedy."

In Brussels, Chris Patten, European Commissioner for External Affairs, said: "We are all watching events with absolute horror. Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to our friends in the United States."
