Pak cannot foist govt again on Afghans: Powell

T V Parasuram in Washington

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said Pakistan cannot again "foist a government of its choice" on a post-Taleban Afghanistan.

"The next government of Afghanistan cannot be dictated by Pakistan or any other neighbour. All the other neighbours have an interest in the government. The king has a role to play," Powell said on Wednesday briefing the House International Relational Committee.

Pakistan, he said, has an interest in Afghanistan because of its proximity and cannot therefore stay indifferent, but "I get a clear impression that Pakistan cannot do what they did before, namely foisting a government of their choice".

Whatever government takes shape in the new Afghanistan, Powell said, "Has to have international blessing."

Before going to Capitol Hill, Powell planned a post-war government in Afghanistan with chief partner Britain, while Canada sought to persuade the White House to streamline border security.
