Pak braces for mass demonstrations outside air bases

Pakistan's security forces on Tuesday began preparations to face demonstrators, outside the Jacobabad air base in Sindh province, protesting against Pakistan's support the US-led strikes against neighbouring Afghanistan and the presence of US military personnel.

The Jamaat-e-Islami, which has a substantial following in Pakistan, has called for the protests.

However, the issue does not seem to have caught the imagination of the general public as not many people were seen to be taking to the streets in protest.

The police are not taking any chances since the Islamic fundamentalists have threatened to storm the air base.

As a precautionary measure, they have erected blockades and bunkers throughout Jacobabad even as shops downed shutters anticipating trouble.

About 100 protestors were arrested on Tuesday morning.
