UN funded front organisation of Osama: BBC

In a startling revelation, the BBC on Sunday said the United Nations donated over $1 million to a charity believed by the United States to be a front organisation for Saudi terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden.

The UN donated more than $1.4 million in 1997 to the Sudan-based Muwafaq Foundation, a consortium of charities, floated by wealthy Arab businessman Yasin al-Qadi whose assets were frozen by the US after the September 11 terror strikes, the BBC said in an investigative report in its on-line edition.

The US treasury believes that the charity was used by wealthy Saudi businessmen to transfer billions of dollars to bin Laden.

Al-Qadi has denied any connection with terrorism and has instructed his lawyers in the US and Britain to work to clear his name, the report said.

His lawyers in London said, "Our client is horrified and shocked that his name has been included in this (treasury) list."

The investigation showed that the UN funded the Muwafaq (blessed relief) Foundation to 'promote educational and social development programmes in Sudan'.
