US jets begin sorties in Pak airspace: Report

American F-18 fighter aircraft have begun sorties in the air corridors over Pakistan airspace, media reports said on Saturday.

United States Air Force jets carried out surprise sorties on October 4 in the air corridor provided by Pakistan, the Pakistan Observer said.

The use of the air corridor by the US planes created a "panic" in the Pakistan Air Force, which sent its own F-16s to provide security cover to the nation's "vital" installations, it said quoting official sources.

"Later, it transpired that the US fighters were carrying out reconnaissance missions in the allowed air corridor. Even during the early hours on Friday, the US jets carried out many sorties," it said.

The report, however, was not clear whether the US jets went on reconnaissance missions into Afghanistan or remained in Pakistani airspace.

"Pakistan has also notified 'no flying zone' to the US authorities in charge of its air fleet in the region," the report said.
