US, Russian forces launch operations: Report

American and Russian forces have launched joint operations to track down and eliminate terrorist warlord Osama bin Laden, and about 200 of his followers, Pakistani media said on Friday.

Russian troops belonging to the Tajikistan-based 201 Motorised Rifle Division, have joined the Delta and Seal commandos of the US who have already crossed into Afghan territory for reaching the heights of Pamir, The News International said quoting sources.

"To reach Osama's suspected hideouts, advance parties of US commandos had already begun crawling from a launching site in Tajikistan since last Thursday. Russians had pointed at the suspected hide-outs and provided route maps to some sites which were used for storing the nuclear-tipped missiles by the former USSR during the culminating years of the cold war at the heights of Pamir," the daily said.

Following September 23 talks between US President George W Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the daily said, "Our sources claim ... latest models of anti-terrorist equipment were hastily delivered to Russia by the US and that the Russian troops joined their American counterparts after a week of familiarisation with these weapons."

The daily said most of the Russian troops, now inching towards Pamir, were fluent in Pushto, while many have working knowledge of Dari, the spoken Persian in Afghanistan.
