Taleban chief Mullah Omar in Kunduz: Report

Taleban supreme leader Mullah Mohammed Omar was in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, where thousands of militiamen were engaged in a battle with the opposition forces backed by United States bombers, IRNA reported on Friday.

The Iranian news agency quoted deputy ambassador of the Afghanistan Islamic Government to Tajikistan, Mohyuddin Mahdi, as saying that though further details were not available, the "authenticity of the news could be vouched".

The Taleban's fierce resistance in the province in the face of the Northern Alliance besiege of the region had further given rise to speculations that Omar could be in Kunduz, Mahdi said.

IRNA said the Taleban had gathered its fighters in Kunduz and was preventing residents from leaving the province, using them as human shields against probable attacks by the Alliance or the US.
