India, Russia for pursuing campaign
against terror to its logical end

Giving a major thrust to their strategic partnership, India and Russia on Tuesday agreed that the campaign against international terrorism "must be pursued to its logical end" and asserted that there was no place for Taleban in a future Afghan government.

Significantly, Russia came out in strong support of India's candidature for permanent membership of an enlarged UN Security Council.

A joint statement issued after wide-ranging talks between visiting Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Russian President Vladimir Putin said the on-going operations in Afghanistan could be "at best a first phase in the campaign against international terrorism which must be pursued to its logical end."

In an obvious reference to New Delhi's concerns over Pakistan-backed terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts, the statement said "it was essential that every State be made to refrain from organising, instigating, assisting or participating in terrorist acts in another State or acquiescing in organised activities within its territories directed towards the commission of such acts."

The two countries stressed the need for early finalisation of the Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism and India's initiative for a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism in the UN.

On Afghanistan, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Afghanistan.

Vajpayee, on a four-day State visit to Russia, discussed the entire range of bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual concern with the Russian leadership.

The prime minister's visit would facilitate further development of strategic partnership between the two countries, expansion of bilateral cooperation and interaction aimed at strengthening international strategic stability and in the building of a just, fair, democratic and multi-polar world, the statement said.

The two sides agreed to give greater depth, span and content to their bilateral relations and identified steps to further strengthen them.
