No point in holding talks with Taleban: UN envoy

The United Nations's special representative for Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi on Thursday ruled out any talks with the Taleban regime saying there 'wasn't much interest or benefit for anybody'.

The special envoy of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had arrived in Islamabad on Sunday for consultations with Pakistani leaders and Afghan groups to discuss the post-Taleban scenario in Afghanistan.

However, he had declined to meet the Taleban's ambassador to Pakistan Abdul Salam Zaeef citing lack of time.

Brahimi told reporters in Islamabad that had the Taleban leadership heeded the advice of the UN earlier, the people of Afghanistan would not have had to put up with the United States-led attacks.

The Taleban in turn had accused the UN of being 'a tool' of the US.

Brahimi said it was the Afghan people who were suffering the consequences of the terror attacks in the US and that the UN had already begun mobilising funds for the development and reconstruction of the nation.
