Jersey drowning case: One more body found

Paterson's Bangladeshi community came one page closer to closing a tragic chapter in their lives when 16-year-old Jubeda Ahmed was buried on Sunday evening.

Police divers found Jubeda's body on Saturday floating one mile from Rockaway Beach in Queens, where she, her sister Shajeda and cousin Rahela Begum were swept away into the Atlantic by a strong riptide last Monday.

Begum, 14, was found minutes after she disappeared, almost four miles from where she went into the water. Rescuers could not revive her and she was buried last Tuesday.

Divers continue to search for Shajeda, 12.

Police were able to distinguish Jubeda from her sister because she wore braces, while Shajeda did not.

Jubeda's body was brought back to her New Jersey town in a thin pine coffin, draped in paisley cloth, for her janaaza namaaz at Masjid Jalalabad.

Her family and friends endured another painful farewell, having hoped that she might be alive.

"They thought [Jubeda and Shajeda] might just walk back through the door," said Asmat Ali, an uncle to the girls, with regards to their parents.

Another uncle went to the morgue to identify Jubeda, Ali explained, because her parents couldn't do it.

"The parents are happy that they can put her to rest," he said. "But otherwise, only Allah knows what they are thinking right now."

Like the funeral for Begum, Jubeda's coffin was brought into the street adjacent to the mosque, to accommodate all the worshippers who showed up for the namaaz (prayer).

Jubeda was then taken to Totowa Cemetery, on the outskirts of Paterson, where she was buried next to her cousin.
