US rules out surrender
deal for Kandahar

T V Parasuram in Washington

The United States on Thursday ruled out a surrender deal for Kandahar which would allow Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar to "live in dignity" and said that its goal remained to bring Osama bin Laden and the militia chief to justice.

Ruling out a surrender agreement, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said: "Would an arrangement with Omar where he could live in dignity be consistent with what I have said."

He said the US has made clear to the forces fighting the Taliban with the help of the US what the US wants.

"We have as our principle objectives to see that we effectively deal with the senior Al Qaeda leadership and the Taliban leadership," he said.

Rumsfeld warned that if Omar was allowed to "live in dignity," US relations with Afghanistan will "go south."
