In the last few years a lot has changed for Indian business in the United States of America. Just a few years back India was struggling to meet the quickly-changing demands of the global marketplace. Today, it has joined the ranks of countries whose economies are on the upswing.

No wonder then that India Telecom - an international business conference focusing on India's telecom industry - scheduled for May 18-19 at Wyndham Hotel Washington DC, has become a keenly awaited event here.

The event is part of the Emerging Markets Week. China Telecom is scheduled for May 16-17 at the same venue.

The two-day India Telecom will focus on market information about products and services, administrative initiatives and presentations by Indian telecom companies seeking suppliers.

"The event will provide an opportunity for companies to learn about one of the fastest-growing telecom markets," says Corey J Hollister, director of events for Information Gatekeepers Inc., which is organizing the conference.

"It will be a place for corporate executives, venture capitalists, investment bankers, marketing directors and industry analysts to make contacts and explore opportunities while obtaining the information necessary to make strategic decisions," Hollister adds.

Among the sectors likely to be represented at the conference are optical fibre cabling, switches for cellular networks, ISP systems and gateways, power and e-commerce applications.

Avinash Nigudker, who represents Information Gatekeepers in India, said the purpose of the conference is to make the US investors aware of the several opportunities available in India. And toward that, he has reined in some big-time telecom players from India who will attend the two-day event.

The speakers will include Rajesh Tuli, director of Usha Informatics Private Ltd., New Delhi; Professor S Manikutty, Business Policy Area of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad; Air Commodore S S Motilal, chairman and managing director of ITI Limited, Bangalore; N P Sen, managing director of SMES Ltd., New Delhi; Sanjay Aggrawal, managing director of Paramount Communications Ltd., New Delhi; C S Rao, country manager of Tellabs India Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore; Ankur Lal, chief executive of Infozech Software Private Ltd., New Delhi; and B J Panda, chairman of Ortel Communications, Bhubhaneshwar.

Doing business will also be a major focus of India Telecom. To achieve this, there will be a special feature called the Buyer's Corner, where Indian telecom service providers will look to match up with future suppliers. "It will give companies a direct opportunity to start or continue doing business in this emerging market," Hollister says.
