Dulhan... Seduces Thousands in England

David Dhawan's Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge is having a ball in England.

The Salman Khan-Karisma Kapoor movie grossed about $ 170,000 on 21 screens in England last weekend. Its $ 8,000 per screen gross was the highest in the country.

Dulhan grossed about $ 20,000 more than the next entry among the top 15, Hurricane, which had garnered an Oscar nomination for its star Denzel Washington.

In the United States, figures for the three-day weekend were not available but the market buzz has it that Dulhan is shaping into an above-average success. After duds like Hello Brother, Salman Khan could be back in popular business in movie houses across America.

Its success in England has lifted the box-office gloom there. The last hit in England, Rajshri's Hum Saath Saath... ended its run with over $ 1 million a few months ago. If Dulhan maintains its current pace, it could have a profitable run, ending with at least $ 500,000. And if its success is mirrored in America, it could earn about $1 million.

The desi market scene in America has been dull for several weeks. Dulhan could lift the box-office clouds. The only bright achiever in recent weeks has been Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa Pyar Hain. During its first two weeks, the film did less than decent business primarily because of the paucity of movie houses. It made less than $ 60,000 during the first 14 days.

But when films such as Badal and Khauff failed to ignite North American market, Kaho Na... continued its run in about half a dozen theaters in New York and California.

Though it never made into the Variety chart of top 60 films, it has reportedly grossed about $100,000 -- not a spectacular figure compared to the box-office of Taal or Hum Saath... in North America.

The final box-office of Kaho Na still does not reflect its huge success in India, but the film is far from being a dud here. With the CDs selling in thousands, the movie is expected to have a terrific video sale.
