Dev Anand loses award Hillary gave him

E-Mail this report to a friend

Dev Anand, star of the yesteryear, said he had lost the award he received recently from US First Lady Hillary Clinton.

"Someone has flicked it," a rueful Dev Anand said after he realised the loss at the function at the Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan, according to a report in The Asian Age. He had received the award when he was felicitated by the International Punjabi Society.

Dev Anand was formally introduced to the first lady after which she presented him the award.

"After the ceremony I was completely surrounded by the Indians there. Everyone wanted to shake hands with me, touch me, have a picture taken with me. I got so involved with the whole activity that I forgot my trophy on the table. I realised [what happened] only after I reached my room. I called the management and had the whole hotel security look for it. But no luck."

The hero now can only draw consolation from the fact that he could at least meet the first lady, something he was really looking forward to.

"Yes, I was eager to meet her. I formally invited her to India during my speech and she agreed. But he said that he later told her she ought to visit India as an ordinary citizen, a friend, and not a state guest, to see the real India.

"She is an excellent orator. Her style, her language, is just amazing," he says, only regretting that he could not have a prolonged talk with her. He hopes to do that when she comes to India -- some time.
