Indian bride to serve time in stabbing death of husband

E-Mail this report to a friend

An Indian woman who admitted killing the man she wed in an arranged marriage just weeks after she returned with him to the United States has begun a minimum 11-year prison sentence.

Kinnari Ramesh Sutariya, 21, was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the stabbing death of her husband in January at their apartment in Canton, suburban Detroit, Michigan.

Wayne County Prosecutor Daniel Less said the family of the victim, Ramesh Sutariya, 28, was satisfied with the plea agreement that eliminated the need for a trial.

Under Michigan law, Sutariya could have got a mandatory life sentence if a trial jury had found her guilty of first-degree murder.

"The family here ... suffered a great loss," said Less. "They are in complete agreement with what we did."

Less said the bride's family did not come to the United States, but a video made by her father was played at the sentencing before Judge George Bruce Morrow.

"He said his daughter would never do anything like this," said Less.

"Yesterday, she said she wishes she could turn back time," he added.

The couple was married on Christmas Eve in India, but then returned to the United States where Ramesh Sutariya, an American citizen, was a doctor.

Sutariya will be deported when she has finished serving her time which began on Friday, Less said, citing immigration officials.
