India talks to FBI about cyber crime: PTI

India has taken up with the Federal Bureau of Investigation the issue of fighting cyber crime, Information and Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan told the Rajya Sabha today.

Answering supplementaries during question hour, Mahajan said he had recently led a delegation to the FBI headquarters in Washington to obtain a firsthand knowledge about measures the US government has taken to counter cyber crimes.

Stating that India was part of the "digital dozen", that is, one of the 12 countries having an IT Act, he said the legislation enacted on May 17 is still to be notified for implementation. It is expected to be implemented on August 15.

He said the details of the act would soon be made available on an official web site so that people could contribute their views on it.

Mahajan said that since cyber crimes were different in nature from other crimes, it was challenging dealing with them.

"The government is seized of the problem and we need to propagate cyber ethics," he said.
