US calls for immediate end to J&K violence: PTI

The United States today called for an immediate end to violence in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the latest killings by militants in the state and said it respected the Line of Control LOC and wanted Indo-Pak dialogue.

Asked about the latest massacres by terrorists after the ceasefire was declared by the Hizbul Mujahideen, acting States Department spokesman Philip Reker said, "We have always called for a stand against violence and a reduction of tension by rejecting violence.

"Our position ... was highlighted by the president (Bill Clinton) when he went to the region in March. Our position very much advocates restraint, that is, mutual restraint in regard to Kashmir; respect for the Line of Control; and renewal, a resumption, of dialogue, which is obviously the most important way forward; and a rejection of violence," Reker said.
