Golden goal win for Sporting Club de Goa

Our Correspondent

For the second successive day, a golden goal decided the outcome of the Federation Cup football match, as Sporting Club de Goa got the better of Indian Bank, Madras, 1-0 at the Nehru stadium, on Thursday.

Medio Peter Pereira netted the all-important goal in the second minute of extra-time to earn the Goa team a meeting with Calcutta giants East Bengal in the second round on August 19.

The Goa team, after a surrendering midfield ascendancy for a major part of the match, came into their own late in the second half and continued in the same vein in extra-time to snatch victory.

The match-winner came following a goalmouth scrimmage after striker Jerose Oliveria's shot was blocked by bank goalkeeper Sebastian Netto, who came a cropper in the process. Off the rebound Wilson Fernandes back-passed for Peter Pereira, who found the roof of the goal with a stiff shot.

The bankmen had themselves to blame for the defeat. They held a clear edge over the Goans but their strikers Sabir Pasha and Sudanese Elwaseg Badry failed to cash in on the good work of medio Bobby Hamilton, who provided them with several good openings.

Towards the end, the bankmen were reduced to ten men as Badr was given marching orders after receiving his second yellow card.

There was a bit of controversy as the Goan team was forced to change their colours in the second session following an appeal by scribes covering the match. As the numbers on their jerseys were not easily identifiable on an orange background, scribes submitted a letter of protest to match commissioner and Tamil Nadu Football Association secretary T R Govindarajan. In the second session, Sporting Club de Goa took the field with yellow jerseys.
