Betting racket busted

With the arrest of seven people, the police in Thane, a township north of Bombay, claim to have busted a major betting racket during cricket matches.

Police said on Monday that Crime Branch officials raided a flat where they caught the seven persons red-handed. They said the persons were watching the West Indies-Pakistan cricket match, being played at St. John's, Antigua, and betting through telephones and mobile phones.

Ashwin Mane, a resident of Ghatkopar, police alleged, is the brain behind the racket. The arrested have been identified as Jayesh Magan Malde (24), Nilesh Jogi (40), Pankaj (29), Karet dindowcha (36), Anit Shirva (21) and Rajesh Singh (20). All of them are residents of Ghatkopar in north-east Bombay.

Police seized seven telephones, seven mobile phones, four telephone recorders, a colour television and other electronic equipment. Investigations are one.
