Woolmer feels 'betrayed'

Former South Africa coach Bob Woolmer today joined the ranks of the sceptics in the Hansie Cronje betting scandal.

Cronje was sacked as national captain last month after admitting taking money from a bookmaker for providing information. He has denied involvement in match-fixing.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph today Woolmer said he had initially defended Cronje.

''I now feel betrayed and my suspicions against him have hardened,'' Woolmer said.

''Now I have to look back and wonder whether he started flirting with betting and match-fixing during my tenure. I desperately hope not.

''I believe it would be the end of any respect I have had for him.''

Woolmer said the judicial investigation into the affair would be as thorough as Cronje used to be on the cricket field.

''The evidence is pointing to an overwhelming damnation of South Africa's No 1 son,'' he said.
