CBI to probe Bacher's fix claim

The Central Bureau of Investigation today said it would a claim that India's win over rival Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup was fixed.

The CBI is to ask for the report of South Africa's King Commission, now probing the match-fixing scandal in Cape Town.

The CBI's official spokesman, S M Khan, said that at this point, UCBSA chief Ali Bacher's claim that the World Cup match between India and Pakistan was fixed, was merely an unproven allegation.

"Bacher's statement is still an allegation, but if there is any link of an Indian player in this particular game, then we will investigate and verify it," Khan told AFP.

A CBI probe is already on into separate claims that Indian cricketers were involved in fixing international matches, Khan pointed out, adding that if needed, the agency would urge Cape Town for the report of the King Commission.

The Delhi police, which opened the Pandora's Box on April 7 when it charged Cronje and three others with match-fixing, has already requested a copy of the King Commission report, as and when completed.

Police sources told AFP meanwhile that the Delhi police has offered to swap tapes containing purported conversations between Cronje and bookies for a copy of the King Commission report.
