Undertrial runs off with policeman

An undertrail in a murder case and a policeman assigned to guard him have fled from a civil hospital in Punjab's Kapurthala district.

According to a first information report filed by Kapurthala Deputy Superintendent of Police (jails) Rup Kumar, the undertrial Bikramjit Singh was admitted to the surgical ward with urinary trouble. He, along with constable Paramjit Singh, disappeared the next night.

Two other guards, who were also supposed to be on duty then, had gone home when the incident took place. A fourth guard, who was off duty, was sleeping on the precincts.

The two errant policemen were arrested when they returned in the morning. The fourth guard has also been taken into custody.

The police have registered a case under sections 223 and 224 of the Indian Penal Code against head constable Harnek Singh and constables Major Singh, Rajesh Kumar and Paramjit Singh.
