Pakistan said on Thursday that India should help it investigate the Mumbai attacks instead of accusing the country's institutions of being involved in the terrorist incident.
Reacting to a comment by Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence
agency was involved in planning and launching the Mumbai attacks, Foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit said such
statements were "not helpful to the investigation process".
Basit said India "should not jump the gun" by making such statements at a time when Pakistan is "sincerely carrying out
investigations" into the attacks.
India should help Pakistan probe the incident instead of accusing the country's institutions, he said.
Menon's statement, made at a conference in Paris, was the first direct accusation by India that the ISI was involved in
the Mumbai attacks.
Pakistan is expected to make public the report of its preliminary probe into the Mumbai attacks later this week. The
report was drawn up by a three-member investigating team that examined the Indian dossier on the attacks.
