Four security personnel and a Hizbul Mujahideen militant were killed on Monday in two gunbattles in Poonch and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Acting on a tip-off, army troops and police launched a joint cordon and search operation in Tarawali forest belt in Surankote on Sunday night, Sub Divisional Police Officer of Surankote Parbeet Singh told PTI.

During the operation, militants opened fire to which the security personnel retaliated, Singh said.

"No militant has been killed so far in the encounter," he added.

Four security personnel, including two army jawans have been killed and one injured in the encounter, which is still underway, he said.

The slain army personnel have been identified as Vishnu and Jurnail Singh. Maqbool Shah and Mohmmad Maroof were the two policemen who were killed in the encounter.

The injured army jawan was identified as Om Prakash.

In another operation, a self-styled commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Munir Pir alias Munawar was shot dead by security forces in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, a top Hizbuk militant Shabir Ahmed Bhat alias Alfa two was arrested in Doda district, police said.

Bhat was operating in the district for the past five years and was involved in attacks in security forces.

He has been sent to joint interrogation centre, they said.
