Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is meeting leaders of different political parties in Srinagar on Friday after dedicating the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project at Chanderkote, Ramban in Jammu region to the people.

The meeting is being held, about 48-hours after a three-member Election Commission of India, headed by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami held detailed interactions with the representatives of seven national and three state recognised political parties and sought their view with respect to the forthcoming elections to the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly.

It also assumes significance as almost all the parties based in the valley, including the National Conference, the Peoples Democratic Party and Communist Party of India-Marxist had informed the EC delegation that situation was not conducive for early elections in the state.

However, the leaders of these parties have said they will contest the polls if held even without addressing their concerns.

The Jammu-based parties, including the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, the National Panthers Party and others have however favoured elections in the state to avoid imposition of Presidents Rule.

Sources close to the PDP, CPI-M and NC said they will seek the implementation of recommendations of five working groups set up by Dr Singh on Kashmir. The WGs have submitted their recommendation and there is no reason to delay their implementation.

The parties will also reiterate that situation is not conducive for polls and if the EC goes ahead with the process it will not be credible, the sources said.
