The Central Administrative Tribunal on Wednesday set aside the appointment of A N Roy as Maharashtra's Director General of Police.

Director general (home) Suprakash Chakravarthy, another senior Indian Police Service officer from the state, had filed an application before the tribunal challenging Roy's appointment.

Chakravarthy contended that Roy was made the DGP by superceding three other officers who were senior to him.

The CAT observed that government was bound to consider these three senior most officers--Chakravarthy, SS Virk and Veerkar--as per the Supreme Court's earlier judgement.

Roy will continue in his post for a month and within this time the government will have to take a decision on a new appointment.

Earlier in the day, the Bombay High Court had dismissed a Public Interest Litigation challenging Roy's appointment on the same grounds, saying that the matter was pending before the CAT.
