State and international borders in Mizoram were sealed to prevent any interference of insurgent groups during the assembly polls on December 2.

The Mizoram government has asked for additional 15 companies of Central para-military force in the state ahead of the elections to the 40-member state legislative assembly.

Mizoram Joint Chief Electoral Officer Lalmingthanga told PTI today that the Assam Rifles and Border Security Force, deployed along the 722-km-long international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, would increase its deployment after operationalisation of six companies now under training.

"Strict vigil has been maintained in all the entry and exit points along the borders, especially with Manipur, Assam and Tripura and also with neighbouring foreign countries," Lalhmingthanga said.

He said intensive patrolling is being taken up in the border areas.

Most of the polling stations in the border areas are identified as sensitive or hyper-sensitive polling stations, he said.

The security personnel cannot be everywhere along the porous borders, but more patrolling and deployment of more forces would lessen the risk of unwanted elements crossing the borders to disrupt the elections, he added.
