Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Thursday told his American counterpart George W Bush that the party that had secured a majority in the just-concluded general election would form the new government and he would facilitate the process.

Bush, who telephoned Musharraf from his special aircraft 'Air Force One' while on his way to Liberia, congratulated the Pakistan President on holding free and fair elections.

During their 15-minute conversation, Bush said the US would also support Pakistan's efforts to usher in democracy and the fight against terror, official sources said.

Musharraf told Bush that the party that had a majority in the national assembly, the lower house of Parliament, would form the new government and he would facilitate the formation of governments at the centre and the four provinces, the sources said.

The PML-Q, the party that backs Musharraf, was routed in the February 18 general election., which was swept by the opposition Pakistan People's Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Musharraf faces possible impeachment if the opposition parties unite to attain a two-thirds majority in the new Parliament.
