Southwest monsoon hits Kerala

The southwest monsoon set in over Kerala on Monday, four days ahead of schedule, bringing widespread rainfall in many parts of the state and Lakshadweep.

Local Meteorological Centre Director K Santhosh told UNI that several parts of the state received heavy rainfall due to the monsoon and conditions were favourable for its further advancement into the interior parts of the state.

Santosh said heavy rainfall was likely for the next 48 hours.

Konni in Pathanamthitta District received a maximum of 17 cm rainfall during the past 24 hours, followed by Thrissur (12 cm), Kozha (Kottayam), Mancompu (Alappuzha) and Alappuzha (11 cm each), Kozhikode (10 cm), Thiruvananthapuram and Varkala (nine cm each), Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram Airport (eight cm each) and Nilambur (seven cm).
