Taking serious note of allegations that two soldiers tried to rape a girl in Kashmir, Defence Minister A K Antony has sought a report into the incident.

Antony has asked Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt to furnish the report by Friday.

The issue also came up during the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, sources said.

Dutt has asked Army Chief Gen J J Singh for his comments on the issue, but as he is out of the country, Vice Chief Deepak Kapoor will be responding, they said.

The two soldiers -- Balwant Singh and Joginder Singh of the Rashtriya Rifles -- have been accused of attempting to rape a 17-year-old girl near Bandipora town in Jammu and Kashmir.

Agitated by the alleged incident, locals had caught hold of the two and thrashed them.

The two men were also paraded naked through the streets of the town after their heads were shaven and their faces smeared with black colour.
