The Kerala government is expected to take action against some officials responsible for a lapse in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's security during his visit, official sources said on Thursday.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan discussed the matter with state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the director-general and the additional director-general of police, and other senior officials.

According to the sources, action against some officials is on the cards based on ADGP Jacob Punnoose's report on the incident.

A pilot vehicle in the prime minister's motorcade had deviated from the prescribed route on the way from the Thiruvanthapuram airport to the Raj Bhavan on October 31, causing confusion among security agencies.

Balakrishnan, who personally apologised to the prime minister for the lapse, has sought details of the circumstances that led to the incident.

Investigations are on to find out how a person who is not a regular police employee was entrusted with driving the pilot car in the motorcade.

The probe is also focusing on the cause of the incident that occurred despite several rehearsals of the security drill.

The incident embarrassed the state government because it occurred despite clear instructions that no chances should be taken in security preparedness following last week's e-mail threat to the Prime Minister and President from a man in Kochi who was later arrested.
