The situation along the Indo-Bangla border in Assam's Cachar district remained tense but under control on Sunday, with the Border Security Force and police intensifying patrolling and maintaining a strict vigil on a troop build-up by the Bangladesh Rifles.
Officials said BSF Commandant Biplab Sengupta and Assam Police DIG (Southern Range) Y Gautam visited the Harinagar and Kinnorkhal area to monitor BDR troop movements.
Bangladeshi farmers entered Porbond area near Surma river inside Cachar on Saturday and were working on land there but BSF troops chased them away.
The state police has strengthened the "second line of defence" along the border and the BSF is setting up a 60-foot tower at Rajatilla to keep a watch on BDR activities.
The BDR deployed additional forces along a 32-km stretch of the border opposite Katigorah area of Cachar district, creating tension among local villagers.
The police has held meetings to assure the villagers that they were safe and have taken up other confidence building measures.
Officials claimed the BDR move might be aimed at encouraging cross-border crimes and helping terrorists to cross over to India for subversive activities to create panic among the local populace.
Senior Union home ministry officials are scheduled to visit the area soon to assess the situation.
