Four policemen died, while one managed to escape after their vehicle got stuck in swirling waters when they were on their way to a rescue operation in the flood-hit Kheda district of south Gujarat early on Friday morning, a senior government official said.

Only two bodies have been recovered so far.

The cops were on their way to Phagwel to rescue 43 passengers stuck in a state transport bus on a flooded stretch of road.

"Deputy Superintendent of Police R S Sangada, who survived the mishap, said the jeep toppled in the swirling waters. While he managed to hold on to the vehicle, the others were washed away.

Police said they did not have any information about the stranded bus passengers as the rising waters have cut off access to the area.

Incessant rains and floods have so far claimed 90 lives in the state.

Seven days of uninterrupted downpour has made it tough for the army to rescue the 300-odd passengers stranded onboard the Shanti Express in Dakor in Kheda district.
