The Kashmir Valley continued to reel under intense cold wave conditions with night temperature touching - 4.1º Celsius, the weather department said in Srinagar on Monday.

However, the low night temperature was followed by bright sunshine early Monday morning, which improved the visibility as the fog covering the skies for most of the past fortnight was reduced considerably.

The fringes of the famous Dal Lake were frozen, forcing people to use boat pedals to break through the ice to make way to the mainland. Taps supplying water to households had also frozen due to the cold.

However, the day temperature continued to hover around 10º C for the third successive day on Sunday, officials said.

The valley has been in the grip of a severe cold wave for the past seven weeks with temperatures dipping below the freezing point as early as November 15.

The day and night temperatures this season have been several degrees below normal for the corresponding periods with the coldest night of this winter recorded at -6.3º C, which was five degrees below normal.
