Security forces killed four militants, including two in a 50-hour gunbattle in Sopore town of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said Saturday.

The protracted gunbattle, which began around 3.30 pm on Thursday following an abortive attempt by ultras to storm the Border Security Force battalion headquarters in the north Kashmir town, ended Friday night with the killing of two ultras, a BSF spokesman said.

The bodies of two militants holed up inside the horticulture department building who were engaged in a gunbattle with the BSF at Sopore, 55 km from Srinagar, were recovered Saturday, the spokesman said.

The mutilated bodies of the ultras, one of them burnt beyond recognition, were recovered alongwith their weapons, he said.

Sopore town remained under tight cordon for the third day Saturday as the BSF troops were still searching the building where the militants had taken shelter, the officials said.

A portion of the building was gutted during the encounter, which also claimed life of a BSF jawan and left six others including three security men injured on Thursday.

In another encounter, security forces killed two militants at Gujjarpathi-Sumlar in Bandipora area of Baramulla district Friday night, the officials said.

The gunbattle broke out Friday when troops laid a cordon around the village to flush out hiding militants, they said adding, a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from slain ultras.
